This presentation introduces a special type of applications of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) in the form of a tube filled with concrete and used in a verity of structural engineering applications including bridge supports, piles and poles. This technology has been developed and studied over more than two decades. The presentation summarizes these development with more emphasis on recent advances in the past several years. The tube is a stay-in-place structural form that may replace all or part of the internal steel reinforcement. It also confines and protects the concrete core from external environmental effects. Different topics covered in the
presentation include: methods of production, installation and pile driving, joints and splices, durability, analysis and design charts, and field applications. The research over the past two decades have led to a number of field applications in bridges, in the form of bridge columns and small span arch bridges, and in marine piles. Additionally, the first AASHTO design guide for CFFT
in bridge applications was developed and published.
