Durable and sustainable concrete infrastructure requires a sound approach to planning, design, and execution. It is not uncommon, however, that unforeseen construction events or defects occur. The consequences of such events are often complicated to estimate but can profoundly impact the durability and sustainability of the project. This presentation will present selected examples of construction issues, the estimated impact on concrete durability and sustainability, and repair strategies aimed to mitigate its effect. The attendees will become familiar with the process in North America for the construction of structures with long service life, i.e., 75 years or more.
