The performance of reinforced concrete flexural members strengthened with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials depends on the bond between FRP and concrete. Moisture, as one of the most common environmental factors, is very important for durability of the bond between FRP and concrete. In this seminar, three experimental setups for evaluating the FRP/concrete bond are introduced. They are modified double cantilever beam (MDCB), single shear pullout and beam tests. Numerical analyses were performed using the experimentally obtained bond-slip relations to model the shear pullout and beam tests. The numerical analyses show that the boundary conditions of the concrete block at the loaded end play an important role in the resulting bond-slip relationship and stress state of the FRP/concrete interface in the pullout tests. The MDCB test was used to evaluate the durability of FRP/concrete bond in moist environments. Based on the experimental results and a moisture diffusion model, a bond mechanism-based deterioration model of bond interfacial fracture energy was proposed for FRP-concrete bond joints in moist environments. Finally, a novel and simple approach which can enhance the interfacial bond behavior between FRP and concrete was proposed. Experimental and analytical work related to this enhancing approach will be discussed.
